Sept 7th-21st, 2009
The focus of the program is urban and rural sustainability in Tuscany. City-country relationships have long been important in Tuscany. After starting with two days in Siena, we will be based at Spannocchia, a 12th century rural estate located southwest of Siena.

Today the Tenuta is an organic farm and forest and is part of the Alto Merse nature reserve. At Spannocchia students will explore sustainable agriculture and agritourism in self-defined, individual projects. As a group, we will hike in the surrounding countryside, participate in ongoing mapping projects, and help develop an interpretive plan for the cultural landscapes of the estate and its surroundings. We will be staying in a renovated farm building, and we will be served a four-course family-style dinner each evening.
On day trips from Spannocchia, we will examine urban design and social life in Italian hill towns, noted as models of urban sustainability. In previous years, we have visited Volterra and San Gimignano; Massa Marittima (a designated Città Slow ? part of the Slow City movement); the small villages of Chiusdino and Montieri; the 13th century Abbey of San Galgano; and Larderello (the location of the world?s first geothermal power plant).
