(BAO)

The Business Affairs Office (BAO) manages contracts, fiscal analysis and training, accounting, and property management and leasing for the university. Started on August 13th, 2008, this department's Green Team is already working to increase efficiency in office practices. Seven Green Team members represent the BAO's 65 employees.

Current projects

  • Members are recording the number of reams used weekly in each department.
  • The team is compiling a list of strategies for reducing paper use.
  • A tech-savvy member is researching the benefits of Green Print. This is an online tool that eliminates unwanted pages from being printed.
  • The team is also analyzing the ecological impact of its paper purchases and the amount of savings that will result from various rates of reduction.

Sustainable Practices

  • The department uses 100% recycled paper.
  • Recycling bins are located throughout the office.

Business Affairs holds Green Team meetings on the first Thursday of each month. For more information, contact Sarah Horn at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Hi! I just wanted to make a suggestion that since Business Affairs is a unit that interfaces with all other units on campus that you consider how BAO policy affects the paper use in those other units.

Thanks!

Thanks for the input. Our first initiative was to assess our own paper usage and to identify ways to eliminate or reduce usage. We are slowly moving toward streamlining some processes that rely on paper, such as contracts. Unfortunately, is will take quite some time and might require some investment as well. Any ideas are welcome, however. Thanks again.

I'm one of the students working on the Ooligan Press Sustainability Book and I have a question about your Team's activities.

My understanding is that each department is responsible for ordering its own paper, is that so? If you are tracking ream use, I assume that transactions come through your office — is there some kind of unified purchasing system or is it up to each department individually to choose the paper they use?

Thanks for your help — Janine

Hi Janine,
It is up to each department to choose paper. We are working toward tracking paper use campus-wide, and we will probably rely heavily upon Green Teams to help with that. Meanwhile, we are only tracking our own paper use. Go to this site for a tool that will help you make some choices. We found that, given a commitment to use at least 30% recycled content, it makes the most sense to use 100% post-consumer recycled content due to the dramatic difference in environmental impact and the small difference in price. However, you may need higher quality paper in some cases. Send me an email if you need help with the tool. Thanks for your work!
