The Portland State University Student Leaders for Service program strives to cultivate a body of engaged student leaders who foster meaningful connections between the University community and the Portland metropolitan region.
Over the course of its nine years of existence, members have performed approximately 82,000 hours of community service in the Portland metropolitan region, contributing $1,345,620 worth of volunteer service. Student Leaders for Service members have recruited a total of 4,568 PSU student volunteers and 1,580 volunteers from the community-at-large for a total of 85 community organizations. 88 day-long service projects have been performed.
Student Leaders for Service Job Description:
- Serve a minimum of five to ten hours per week for the entire academic year at a community organization with a focus area or mission relevant to the academic, career, and personal goals of the student
- Attend a weekly credit-bearing leadership development and civi engagement skill-building course (offered as IST 299/499: Community Service Practicum in Fall/Spring, offered as PA 311: Introduction to Civic Leadership in Winter).
- Act as a volunteer recruitment liaison between PSU and community organizations.
- Coordinate service projects and participate in national service days.
SLS members receive a monetary stipend for their work during the academic year. First-year membersreceive a $1,000 stipend; for each additional year they stay with the program, students receive an additional $500 (to a maximum stiend of $2,500). Additionally, Student Leaders for Service are eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award through the Bonner Leaders and Students in Service programs.
