(Portland, Ore.) - Portland-based nonprofit Sustainable Northwest has announced the 2009 winners of its annual Cecil D. Andrus Leadership Awards for Sustainability and Conservation, recognizing excellence in pursuit of sustainability from across the West. Among this year’s recipients: the partnership between Portland State University and the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation.

The opening of the new TriMet Green Line is symbolic of the start of our academic year. At Portland State, we are deeply connected with the region, we care about sustainability, and the campus keeps getting better. In addition, programs are growing, and our faculty members are receiving record amounts in research dollars. Our Athletics Department is geared up for more action, coming off its most successful year in the Big Sky Conference. And all across our 49-acre campus, we are improving our facilities after successfully competing for state stimulus dollars. It is an exciting time at Portland State.

There are few buildings and homes being built in Portland, Ore., today that aren't green in some way. But for the city's planners, the goal isn’t merely reaching a certain number of sustainably built structures--it's about creating a green city, as shown by the recent designation of a handful of urban areas as “eco-districts.”

At PSU, we're making a big effort to make our food services support a stable society, economy, and environment. Aramark, our food service provider, has taken major steps toward this goal over the last year. As our University supports and requests sustainable products and practices, we can have a positive influence on food service options on our campus and throughout the country.
