Take Back the Tap!

The student Miller Grant-funded project "Take Back the Tap" has successfully teamed up with PSU Facilities and Planning to install our first water bottle refilling station. The station features a water filter and is located in the first floor of Smith across from the Information Desk.  Check it out!

 

PSU Sustainability Welcomes New Students

Sustainability staff from around campus has coordinated to provide support for new students during summer orientations.  We'll be at all student resource fairs, provide guided composting at catered events, and are setting up a variety of activities during new student week!  Welcome, 2010-11 incoming students!

 

Student Volunteers Needed

Are you looking to expand your resume this summer?  Sustainability offers a variety of volunteer opportunities that can help you network and develop skils in a variety of areas.  To get involved, email Heather Spalding, Sustainability Leadership and Outreach Coordinator, at hspaldin@pdx.edu.

 

Food for Thought Cafe is Open This Summer

The student-run cafe wil have pastries and coffee available from 9 am - 2 pm Monday through Thursday. Feel free to stop by in the basement of Smith Student Union. Yum!

PSU's new Sustainability Leadership and Outreach Coordinator is compiling PSU's first Sustainability Bulletin.  Look for it at the beginning of August.  For now, you can sign up for the bulletin by becoming a member of the EcoWiki!  Click "create an account".

The BTA's 2009 Bike Commute Challenge has officially begun! PDF Print E-mail

And what a start it was: at the end of Day One we collectively had logged over 24,500 miles in bike commutes.

 

Did you log a bike commute yesterday?

If so, you probably saw our featured Bike Commute Photo of the Day feeding from the BTA Blog.  We'll be featuring a new commuter photo every day in September.  Send your photo to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

 

Also, if you log at least one bike commute this week, you'll qualify for this week's prize drawing.  Every week of the Challenge we'll be drawing names from each participating region.  We'll announce this week's prizes and winners in next week's email newsletter.

Student Needed for the Governor's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee PDF Print E-mail

The Governor’s office is looking for a student to sit on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.  If you are interested, please fill out the attached form and send it to the Governor's Office directly. This will operate on a first come, first serve basis. Please feel free to forward widely, but remember I will be sending applications on as soon I receive them. This student should definitely be an avid biker with knowledge of the issues facing students as cyclists.

This position is a four year term, appointed directly by the Governor and will begin immediately upon appointment.

 

From the Governor’s Office:

We need a college student who is an avid bicyclist or pedestrian to be the student rep on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (ORS 366.112).  Their website is http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/BIKEPED/obpac.shtml

 

The statutory language stipulates it be someone under 21 at time of appointment and someone able/allowed to stay in hotels on their own, meaning you must be 18 years old.

U.S. News and World Report Singles Out Portland State for Seventh Year in a Row

(Portland, Ore.) Sept. 1, 2009 –Portland State University (PSU) has been singled out in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2010 edition of America’s Best Colleges for its commitment to engagement through its service and learning programs. This is the seventh consecutive year that PSU has been recognized. U.S. News and World Report is publishing a list of schools with outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success.

 

College presidents, chief academic officers, deans of students, and deans of admissions from over 1,300 schools nominated up to ten institutions with stellar examples of each program type. PortlandState was once again noted for First-Year Experience Programs, Internships/Co-ops, Senior Capstones, Learning Communities, and Service Learning.
