Take Back the Tap!

The student Miller Grant-funded project "Take Back the Tap" has successfully teamed up with PSU Facilities and Planning to install our first water bottle refilling station. The station features a water filter and is located in the first floor of Smith across from the Information Desk.  Check it out!

 

PSU Sustainability Welcomes New Students

Sustainability staff from around campus has coordinated to provide support for new students during summer orientations.  We'll be at all student resource fairs, provide guided composting at catered events, and are setting up a variety of activities during new student week!  Welcome, 2010-11 incoming students!

 

Student Volunteers Needed

Are you looking to expand your resume this summer?  Sustainability offers a variety of volunteer opportunities that can help you network and develop skils in a variety of areas.  To get involved, email Heather Spalding, Sustainability Leadership and Outreach Coordinator, at hspaldin@pdx.edu.

 

Food for Thought Cafe is Open This Summer

The student-run cafe wil have pastries and coffee available from 9 am - 2 pm Monday through Thursday. Feel free to stop by in the basement of Smith Student Union. Yum!

US Department of Energy Weatherization Czar Speaks at PSU PDF Print E-mail

When U.S. Department of Energy weatherization czar Gil Sperling spoke this week at Portland State University, a sense of excitement about Oregon's leadership role in energy conservation infused the room.

 

Sperling told state energy bureaucrats and business people Tuesday that within 30 days the federal Department of Energy would be soliciting competitive bids for four or five grants of $80 million to $100 million each. The grants would go to communities that demonstrate an innovative approach to large scale home weatherization efforts, and pair public and private funding. Oregon, he said, is in a competitive position to capture one of those grants, based on the strength of new local and state programs to retrofit homes and businesses. "I'm looking for Oregon to be a leader in programs that address the obstacles to how to leverage private dollars," he said.

Permaculture and Whole Systems Design Course PDF Print E-mail

There is still room in Toby Hemenway's weekend Portland Permaculture Design Course at PSU!

 

This is not his for-credit PSU course (check course listings for this under Educational Leadership & Policy). This is a weekend-intensive community course. The curriculum is the full 72-hour certification course, with certification being offered through the Permaculture Institute USA, the US branch of the International Permaculture Institute.  Toby will be the principal instructor and he will be bringing in several more of the most senior and experienced permaculture instructors in the world, as well as local experts.

Portland State Named a "Best in the West" College by the Princeton Review PDF Print E-mail

(Portland, Ore.) July 29, 2009 – Portland State is one of the best colleges and universities in the West according to The Princeton Review. The education services company selected the school as one of 123 institutions it recommends in its "Best in the West" review.   In the profile on Portland State, The Princeton Review gives Portland State a “Green Rating” of 90 out of 99 based on data concerning Portland State’s environmentally related policies, practices, and course offerings.

Who's team is going to bag this year's Bike Commute Challenge?

 

Tuesday is the first day of September and the first day of the BTA's 2009 Bike Commute Challenge. We hope that you'll join us again in the friendly competition to see who can bike to work more.  Weekly prize drawings, head to head challenges, the goal to beat last year's personal or workplace record. . . It's Challenge time again, and we hope that you'll log back in and start logging trips.
