Ten transformative days at PSU

Students at Portland State have planned 10 full days of community building and placemaking activities for the 2013 PSU Village Building Convergence with the aim of "regenerating our ecological, social, cultural and economic communities". Organizers invite everyone to get involved in transforming our urban spaces.

Reduce, Reuse, Recaffeinate Earth Week Campaign!
The SoMa EcoDistrict is partnering with multiple coffee shops in the district to offer a special Earth Day discount for guests who bring in their own coffee mug during the week of April 22nd. The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness of the tremendous amount of waste from the use of disposable coffee cups every day and to encourage new habits.
Participating retailers will offer a 50¢ discount on drink purchases (an increase from their typical 10¢ discount!) from April 22 through the 26.
Solutions Generator Agricultural Run-off Bioswale Research Project: Phase II
For the second year in a row, our research team is working through the Institute for Sustainable Solutions's (ISS) Solutions Generator funding opportunity. Each year the Solutions Generator program awards grants to help fund student projects which focus on sustainability solutions on campus and in the community.
Make Your Own Laundry Detergent!
On February 10, the Portland State EcoReps hosted the event Suds and Buds to
promote personal initiation in reduction of goods, products, and services. We
went back to our roots and made our own laundry detergent and household
disinfectant spray. The recipes are super simple and less expensive than
prefabricated products—only $5.50 for approximately 100 loads!

Conservation Conversation!
Discussion, chit chat, small talk,
dialogue, conversation. There are many ways to speak to each other, and on
Wednesday, January 28th, PSU’s Eco Reps did just that with students
at their event, Conservation Conversation. The event was held as part of the
group’s effort to let students know about Portland State University’s
involvement in the Campus Conservation Nationals, a nationwide competition
between universities that aims to reduce water and electricity use on campus.

Did you know that unplugging appliances when not in use or
using a power strip eliminates ‘vampire’ energy—small amounts of electricity
sucked up by anything with a plug when it’s not in use? PSU EcoReps reached out
to over 50 students Wednesday night as part of a build-up to Campus
Conservation Nationals. PSU is participating in Campus Conservation Nationals
this year in an effort to reduce electricity and water use in the residence

Today, many people among us are getting increasingly environmentally conscious, and we are adopting ‘greener’ methods of living and committing personally to reduce the carbon footprint. Beyond personal level, several businesses have followed suit and committed themselves to sustainability, in order to curb the overall ecological impact of human actions.
